I love it when I discover a great book that I never knew existed! One that you never knew you needed! That’s how I feel about WorkParty. One day as I was strolling through the library’s aisles, a bold pink book caught my eye. “Hmm, I thought. Is this from that podcast? Is this Create & Cultivate? Oh wowww, is this the creator?” (yes, these were all of my thoughts as I stood there looking at the book) I always get excited when I find new products from brands that I love.
..and I must say, I loved this book as well!
I read the entire book within two weeks. By the time I finished the first chapter I was hooked! I love Jaclyn Johnson’s usage of graphics, #hashtags, and bullet points! It definitely kept my attention with every turning page and made this 233-page book an easy read. Jaclyn Johnson is the CEO and Founder of Create & Cultivate, which is is an online platform and offline conference for women looking to create & cultivate the career of their dreams. I first discovered Create & Cultivate on Instagram a little over two years ago. I’m subscribed to their blog and podcast, so I have no clue how I missed the book! But, I truly believe in divine timing, and when I finally found the book, it came at the perfect time!
WorkParty dives into Jacyln’s personal and professional experiences as she literally and figuratively takes readers down memory lane sharing the trials and tribulations throughout her career, friendships, and love life. While each chapter sheds light on Jaclyn’s successes and failures, she uses these stories to share valuables lessons that any professional woman can apply to her life. I personally highlighted and bookmarked a ton of sections, quotes, and names throughout my copy of Work Party to refer back to.

Several key topics that Jaclyn touched on were: the importance of building your tribe, “work-life” balance, and contracts and negotiations. She also ended the book with the “WorkParty 10 Career Commandments” and a glossary complete of 36 terms that every entrepreneur should know. This was very helpful because there were several terms on that list that I was unfamiliar with. WorkParty definitely planted the seed for me to do some research on a couple of new topics and strategies. Of the 10 Career Commandments, these are my favorite:
Start By Starting
Be A Fucking Pleasure To Work With
Pay it Forward
Overall, I think that WorkParty is great for any creative who is looking for a business book that is also human and relatable. I laughed a lot while reading this book but I also learned a lot too. “WorkParty is Johnson’s career manifesto sharing her story as well as advice on how she turned distrust into determination, frustration into fuel, and heartache into hard work—and how the reader can too.” (https://www.createcultivate.com) If you’re looking for a great read to start off 2020, be sure to grab a copy and “Work hard. Party On.”
